Friday'ness

Nat here.  It's Friday!  I've been stalking design blogs for ideas for the cottage, but keep finding things that I just love. Like this..

Now that is my type of coffee table!

And this...

I wonder if we could fit a reading nook?

Maybe not!  Back to the cottage.  We can't really fit a dining table, what are your thoughts on blended rooms?

I'm not convinced??  You can find some small space inspiration too at Small Space Style.

Finished 50 shades #2, onto #3 - daresay it will be finished over the weekend.  Happy Friday!

Mid-week catch-up

Nat here.  Did you see the fab news here?  The lovely and super talented Katrina is the 2012 recipient of the Julia Child Independent Study Grant!!  I remember seeing the movie in Cayman with the girls and I walked next door to buy the now famous cookbook straight after the movie.  Shaanie fondly declared "booooooon appettit" at our dinner parties from that moment on.

Is everyone else reading this?

So are we...and we have all concluded that although it is a tad (and in some chapters too) racy we can't put it down.

Loving this image on pininterest today..

Counting down to Singapore, can't wait to see Shaanie and her CSD. I've also been stalking fashion on pininterest for what can possibly fill my empty suitcase...

Happy Thursday!

Galah's and things

Nat here.  Hope you had a great weekend.  We were at the Belgium Beer Cafe on Friday night for some friend's who are heading off to London. When did two drinks become $19 in Brisbane?!

Saturday I had afternoon tea with the girls from work at Forget Me Not Tearoom at Graceville.  I score it 10/10 for traditional high tea...

The sandwiches were dead set outrageously fresh.  Home made jams and delicious pastries.  I could have had an entire tier all to myself.  You wouldn't even know it was there from walking past so look it up!

On Saturday we hosted husband's family for a BBQ dinner which was lovely.  I tried out the date and rum cake on the front of the Donna a few issues ago.  It was delicious!! The only thing was I couldn't wait for my caramel sauce to set so it didn't look quite like the cover.  Brought Cayman memories flooding back, there is nothing better than a Tortuga Rum Cake!

Sunday I was in the cake mood again and had two overripe bananas so whipped up a banana cake.
Does anyone else find they use taste.com.au more than there 100 strong collection of expensive cook books? Me too.

Sunday we went to my downright favourite breakfast place - Hampton Living in Paddington.  Smashed avocado and goats cheese and rocket on ciabatta with a poached egg - yes please!

I have been eyeing off a galah pillow at Hampton Living for what seems like months...husband decided that it was enough time to wait and let me splash out on it (tres expensive but it is Made in Australia of course!)...

That's where I'll leave you - in galah goodness.  Happy Monday!!

Queensland sunshine

Nat here.  It's that time of the year again - State of Origin, hope you all watched the game last night from wherever you are in the world!

I made red velvet cupcakes to theme with last night's Origin dinner.  It was my first attempt at these morsels that previously had only be devoured at Magnolia in NYC.

I sent husband to Wheel and Barrow to buy some gel icing as I read in the reviews that good old 'Queen' wouldn't cut it. This was the result..

With maroon papers to match of course!  They were delish! Thanks taste!  Recipe is here.

Husband and I had a mid-week sub away from the hustle and bustle...

Great spot at Kangaroo Point!

Is everyone loving Anna Spiro's recent post?

Anna was the original blogger, I've been following her for years.  Check out her blog and this particularly beauty here.   Happy Thursday!

Where did the weekend go?

Nat here.  Does anyone else get the feeling that weekends just fly?! Me too.

We were meant to go to Panyiri Festival on the weekend.  You know you're married to an accountant when he declares "we can't go and help the Greeks after what they are doing to the global economy", so no honey puffs for us this year but we did enjoy a lovely afternoon with P & J at Sandgate...

Only three weeks until our trip to Singapore to see Shaanie and CSD!! Shaanie has booked us into a fancy pants resort in Bintan...

I can.not.wait! The boys are going to play golf and we're going to the spa, oh yes we are!  I also can't wait to see the big June sales in Singapore.  After shopping in the US for clothes while living in Cayman I just can not bring myself to pay Australian retail prices for clothes so we're taking an empty suitcase.

A big hello to L in Cayman who is checking out the blog this week!  Happy Monday all!

Ex-pat Cravings

Gem here. When living away from your home country there are always things you miss and yearn for. Apart from family and friends, high on my list are Allens lollies (in particular Chico babies), Twisties, Tim Tams and Ponds tinted moisturiser. The great thing about these items is they can usually be popped in the post (at vast expense mind you!) or squeezed into a visitor's suitcase but unfortunately there is something at the top of my list that can't do either. It is something I dream about, salivate about and is always sought out and consumed within the first 30mins of escaping the airport after landing on Aussie soil- a good old SAUSAGE ROLL! You may be aghast, but this flaky, piping hot beauty with a generous splatter of good old tomato sauce (that isn't called ketchup) is all I think about. Brumby's (and not Bakers Delight- trust me, they do not sell sausage rolls. I have made that mistake before and delayed my fulfilment while in an inpatient jet lagged frenzy trying to track down their nearest competitor) makes a fortune out of me on my annual pilgrimage as during my stay I usually work my way through their array of flavoured sweet and savoury bread loaves, pies and of course my beloved S.R.'s. When living in Oz I used to only consume one of these high brow snacks when overwhelmed with the worst of hangovers but distance definitely makes the heart grow fonder as my S.R. fix is non negotiable!

When it all becomes a bit much and a trip home is too far away on the horizon I have found an answer. I have mastered a recipe that I whip up to try and cure those ex-pat cravings....

GEM'S (WISH I WAS AT BRUMBY'S) SAUSAGE ROLLS

Ingredients
1 onion, finely chopped
3 cloves garlic, finely chopped
1 carrot, finely grated
1 zucchini, finely grated
I sprig rosemary
salt and pepper
1 cup fresh wholemeal breadcrumbs
500g chicken mince
1 egg, lightly beaten plus 1 egg extra, lightly beaten
1/2 cup chopped coriander plus extra
1/2 cup chopped flat-leaf parsley
Sweet chili sauce
Tomato sauce (+ extra to serve)
4 sheets frozen puff pastry, just thawed
Sesame seeds

Method
  1. Preheat oven to 200degC and line 2 baking sheets with baking paper.
  2. Cook onion and garlic in small amount of olive oil until softened. Add carrot and zucchini and rosemary sprig and cook for further 5 mins. Set aside to cool. Once cooled, remove rosemary sprig and discard it.
  3. In a large bowl place mince, breadcrumbs, 1 egg, cooled onion mixture, coriander, parsley a good dollop each of tomato and sweet chili sauce and lots of salt and pepper and mix to combine. May need to add more breadcrumbs if too wet.
  4. Place 1 pastry sheet on a floured surface and halve length ways. Spoon an eighth of the mixture length ways along the centre of each piece. Scatter with extra coriander leaves and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Fold both edges of the pastry together to cover the mince and overlap. Squeeze along join to secure. Repeat with remaining pastry and filling.
  5. Cut rolls into desired size (I do around 3cm pieces) and cut two small incisions into each roll to prevent splitting.
  6. Place on baking sheets, cover and chill for 30 mins.
  7. Brush with beaten egg and sprinkle with sesame seeds.
  8. Bake for 25-30 minutes until rolls are lightly browned and cooked through. Serve immediately with tomato sauce.

Love a bit of pomp

Nat here.  We were in a great vantage spot at work yesterday to see the Governor of Queensland arriving at Parliament House in style with marching bands and a 19-gun salute...she waved, it was very royal-like..

I love a good march!

Husband and I picked up our new car yesterday which was fun, they had a sign prepared welcoming us to our new vehicle and an unveiling of the car, it was something else!

We went to Liquorish at Bulimba to celebrate our new pick-up.  Dessert was something to write home about..

Vanilla pannacotta with strawberry jam doughnuts, pistachio crumbs and fig vinicotto, that all spells d-e-l-i-c-i-o-u-s!

Mother's Day and other pieces of Sunshine

Nat here.  We started the weekend off with a lovely breakie at Merthyr Street Cafe, these were husband's blueberry panckakes.  Apparently they were fantastic, not that I would know as I blinked and they were gone!

Saturday night was another famous Guinea, this time hosted by the lovely D and fiance C.  Indian was the flavour of the night and can you believe I didn't take a pic?  It was de-licious.  I think my favourite part was the homemade coconut ice-cream and rum soaked banana - yum!

Sunday was a lovely picnic in the park for Mum, Grandma, Aunty B and Cousin N who we spoiled as much as they deserve, although not the best shot here's the little set-up.  Don't the tulips look cute?  Each Mum received a pair of slippers as a gift because let's face it, winter is coming in BrisVegas and you can never have too many slippers.

We enjoyed scones, an assortment of sandwiches, quiches, rice paper rolls, banoffee slice and this cake that I made with a big cup of love..

I've had a few requests for my pumpkin and fetta pies which are super dooper easy!  Of course it's a taste classic and you can find it here.  Mum has also asked for the banoffee slice recipe which I'll scan in from the book at a later date for all to enjoy!  Happy Tuesday!

Still pinning!

Nat here.  Did you all jump onto pininterest like I suggested? I have been madly pinning, although still getting the hang of it I must admit!

Saw this fab storage idea which might be great for the cottage tidy-up....

It was originally found here - the American better homes and garden's people are very clever!

What do you have planned for Mother's Day?  We're having a nice picnic on the river, should be lovely.  Am cooking up a storm on Saturday.  How good do these look?

A recipe for these is here

Speaking of cooking I was chatting to my lovely pal A last night and guess what?  She put her first entry into a competition at her local branch of the CWA and.....she won!! Of course she did!  Remember, A was the one that put this together for my kitchen tea...

Those little banoffee pies formed part of her entry.  What a superstar, the next stop is the district finals - wooohooo for A!!

If you haven't - you must go to pininterest - go on!  Happy Weekend!

Pot of gold and more sunshine

Gem here. Now that I have digested all the food from New York it is time to report on the rest of our trip. We decided to hit the road and drive north from NYC to the beautiful state of Vermont. We stayed in a cute little house right on Lake Champlain enjoying the cooler temperatures curled up in front of a nice cosy fire.

By day we meandered along the country roads exploring the gorgeous villages and sampling all the delightful local produce; cheeses, ice cream and the liquid gold- maple syrup. Our timing was perfect as we were lucky enough to be there at the tail end of the extremely short maple sugaring season which only lasts 4-6 weeks/year but for some farmers was only 2 weeks long this season due to the weather. We visited a quaint little 3rd generation sugarhouse where we wandered among the 150 year old sugar maple trees, watched the precious sap drip from the spout in the trunk and then the 8 stages of boiling and making the syrup ready for all the hungry hoards.

The slow drip of clear maple sugar sap

We bought up big and I ate pancakes every morning with lashings of local maple syrup- heaven!!!!!!!!!!!

Pots of gold!

The final leg of our journey took us over the border and into the French Canadian city of Montreal where we stayed in the beautiful historical suburb of the 'Old Town' - Vieux Montreal. Cobblestones, stunning old buildings and churches and lots and lots of incredible French food (many menus encouraging you to follow the chefs suggestion and add Foie Gras to all their dishes!).

We had a gorgeous lunch at 'Lemeac'- Pumpkin soup Gratin (didn't think it was possible to beat French Onion Soup but this version with its grilled bread and oozing cheese topping was to die for), grilled calamari with a balsamic and zucchini salad, the obligatory Pomme Frites and husband had Beef short rib with a pearl barley risotto.

www.restaurantlemeac.com

Another memorable meal was at 'Le Club Chasse Et Peche'- I had gorgeous Sea Bass followed by chocolate meringue with Maple ice cream and husband had piglet risotto with truffle oil and shaved foie gras then Guinea Fowl cooked two ways. (http://www.leclubchasseetpeche.com/)

Of course a trip to Canada is not complete without trying the national favourite dish of Poutine which originated in Montreal's state of Quebec. We sought out the home of Poutine which came highly recommended by the locals: 'La Banquise'. Basically the dish consists of pork larded fries with a topping of salty gravy and fresh cheese curds. Glorified chips and gravy to an Aussie and could easily be called a 'heart attack on a plate', 'La Banquise' offers over 20 variants on the classic dish. I chose the original and husbands selection was topped with pepperoni, bacon and grilled onions- as I said, heart attack on a plate. In saying this it is the perfect hangover food and definitely something to try 'when in Rome'!

To top off a fantastic holiday I became quite familiar with the local wildlife. On our final day we took a stroll through the lovely parks of Mont Royal with gorgeous views over the city of Montreal. I have to say I have never seen such tame squirrels- this one took me by surprise and I was so glad husband weighed up rushing to my rescue or taking a photo?! I lived to tell the tale but my apple wasn't so lucky.

Long weekend sunshine

Nat here.  I'm so sad the weekend is coming to an end!  We had an absolute ball celebrating the lovely P's birthday at a Day on the Green yesterday.  Have never seen a bigger crowd! We had a prime position at the top thanks to J who sprinted to the top of the hill to secure our spot...

Daryl Braithwaite had to be the stand out, after that I think the Sirromet wines took over and we may have danced our little hearts out more to the DJ interlude between the next sets of bands.

Today the husband and I headed to Sandgate for a bike ride along the water, it's a lovely spot...

And a trip to Sandgate isn't complete without the customary fish 'n' chips..

And Mountain Dew?  Maybe not....

Happy new week all!

Ready for the long weekend

Nat here.  We had a toast to the long weekend with afternoon tea at work today...

You can see my calculator in the background, just to prove there was work involved!
I'm "totes" (word used with express permission from Shaanie's sister) excited about A Day on The Green on Sunday, this will be us....we have hired a tarago and J's lovely sister is driving it for us...what a superstar!

Can't wait to report back!

Colours

Nat here.  I would love to add some colour to our apartment and have been googling interior design - I stumbled across another great blog here.  This is one that caught my fancy from Kelly Interior Design...

How fresh!  Although somehow I think I'd have trouble convincing the husband.  Hope your week is going well, the whole ANZAC day holiday has thrown me out of whack, we all agreed at work today - it feels like Thursday.
